A great CD by Cliff Richard's SHADOWS

Bruce Welch:

"We were sitting around going through various albums by Gene Vincent and The Blue Caps, Ricky Nelson and Buddy Holly and when we saw the sleeve cover of Buddy holding this fabulous guitar we said: "We've got to have one of those."

No-one had seen one before and, to us, who had been playing acoustic guitars, this one looked like a spaceship, especially to me, as I was still playing the guitar I had at school. In fact, I've got pictures of me at the London Palladium playing that £5 guitar I'd had at school."

Bruce Welch:

"We found out it was a Fender Stratocaster and that Ricky Nelson's guitarist also played a Fender. So Cliff sent off to California for the Fender catalogue and when it arrived we all went through this little catalogue and on the centre pages there were these guitars that looked like spaceships, including one that was pink with a gold-plated maple neck."

Bruce Welch:

"Cliff sent off for the guitar for Hank. It was 140 guineas and, of course, he was the only one who could afford it - we were on £20 a week. So Cliff imported the first Fender Strat into this country. It was flamingo pink and it contributed greatly to the sound of The Shadows. So Cliff was the fairy godmother, or godfather - one of the two!"

Bruce Welch:

(Two years later Fender gave Hank and Bruce matching Strats) "It's the old story. When you're struggling to make it, you can't afford one, and then when you're famous, they give you one!"

Bruce Welch:

"We got into writing songs really early when we were (very) young. An influence for me was Buddy Holly, who wrote his own stuff, unlike Elvis. That's why Hank and I wanted to be like Buddy, who'd churn out these little two-minute songs with three chords, which were perfect for me. From 1959 we were writing album tracks and B-sides for Cliff."

February 16th, 1960.

On Cliff Richard and The Shadows play the Memorial Auditorium, Dallas, Texas.

Lubbock was a particularly poignant stop, because Buddy Holly was a singer they had all admired so much, particularly Bruce and Hank, and his tragic death in a plane crash less than a year before was still fresh in the memory.

Cliff was touched that members of Buddy's family, including his father, came to their concert at Lubbock's Coliseum.

The family, in turn, were moved to hear that Cliff and The Shadows held Buddy in such high regard and that he had been such an influence upon them.

On Cliff Richard and The Shadows play the Coliseum, Lubbock, Texas.

Bruce Welch:

"It was a seven-thousand seater venue and there was an incredible hush when he came on.

Like Buddy (Holly), Hank was slim, dark, he was wearing the same kind of National health glasses, and by then he had the same guitar, a Fender Stratocaster.

To some people in the audience it must have seemed as though it was Buddy standing there.

We were Holly fanatics and I can remember when we first played the London Palladium in the days when the microphone came up through a hole in the stage, I went over to Hank and said:

"Do you realise Buddy Holly was standing right there?"

We were Holly fanatics and we would have loved to have gone to pay our respects at his grave on that first U.S. trip, but there just wasn't time."

1960. Bruce Welch:

"As far as the American record companies were concerned, we were, in effect, taking coals to Newcastle. Why should they bother with releasing foreign rock'n'roll records when they had the originals?

In those days, you could count the rock'n'roll industry on both hands: Elvis, Bill Haley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, The Everlys, Little Richard, Fats Domino and that was it. They were all Americans and we were copying them in those days. So why should they bother when they had the genuine thing?"
