Sonny West is known  as the writer of Buddy Holly's classic hit songs "OH BOY" and "Rave ON" and for his own classic rockabilly release of "ROCK-OLA RUBY" of 1956 on the Nor-Va-Jak record label.

Back to the roots. During the Clovis Music Festival 2005 Sonny visited the Norman Petty Studio. This is an original photo that my buddy Sonny West sent to me.

This is young Sonny West doing something that's not good. I stopped smoking in 1971 and I succeeded until today. 

   Born in Lubbock County, Texas.      Geboren in Lubbock in Texas.

He spent most of his early days in West Texas and New Mexico.

From that early age he developed a fascination with music and sound

recordings, especially blues-based songs.

In early 1957 West wrote OH BOY and teamed up with fellow teen and keyboard player Glen D. Hardin to record a demo of it at the Petty Studio.

Later that year the song was recorded by his friend and contemporary Buddy Holly and backing vocalists The Picks, and soon it also became a smash hit and timeless classic.

OH BOY by Sonny West. Route 66 #444-45 rpm record. First release of a Classic. This is the world's first recording of OH BOY, recorded at Norman Petty Studio in Clovis, New Mexico in February 1957.

(The great Buddy Holly / Crickets version of this song was cut on July 1,

1957 with back-up vocals by The Picks.)

Ende 1957 hatte Sonny West den Titel "RAVE ON" geschrieben und zur Veröffentlichung auf Platte aufgenommen. Dies war seine erste nationale Plattenveröffentlichung auf Atlantic Records, die Platte kam im Februar 1958 raus.

The song was quickly covered by Holly, becoming another huge hit for him. West recorded a number of other songs at the Petty Studio that year.

Dieses Lied wurde schnell von Buddy Holly gecovert und wurde ein Riesenhit für Buddy. In demselben Jahr nahm Sonny eine ganze Reihe weiterer Lieder in dem Studio von Norman Petty auf.

Im Jahr 2002 gastierte Sonny in Hemsby in England. Ein englischer Fan, Gerry Letts, hat diese Aufnahme von ihm gemacht, sehr gelungen.

The end of 1958 came with Sonny West making the choice to dissolve his relationship with his manager Norman Petty and moved to western New Mexico and started playing dances and bars, served his community as a volunteer fireman, carried a deputy sheriffs commission and started his own juke-box business.

Ende 1958 entschied Sonny, die Verbindung mit seinem Manager Norman Petty zu lösen.


Gewisse Parallelen zu den Aktionen von Buddy sind wohl nicht von der Hand zu weisen.

Er zog um in's westliche New Mexico und trat bei Tanzveranstaltungen und in Bars auf, war in seiner Gemeinde Mitglied der Freiwilligen Feuerwehr, ebenso Hilfssheriff und machte sich mit einem eigenen Musikboxgeschäft selbständig.

During the years that followed he has recorded many of his own compositions.

Many of these are included in the Rollercoaster CD "SWEET ROCKIN' ROCK-OLA RUBY" as well as 'various artists' compilations and a recent EPCD with John Pickering.

In den folgenden Jahren hat er eine Reihe seiner eigenen Kompositionen aufgenommen. Viele davon sind mit auf der bei Rollercoaster erschienenen CD "SWEET ROCKIN' ROCK-OLA RUBY". Ebenso ist er bei "Various Artists" Ausgaben damit vertreten und einer  EPCD mit John Pickering.

West continues to appear at larger roots music shows, is a member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame ( Inductee # 38), and the West Texas Music Hall of Fame.

He is the recipient of BMI's Million Airplays Award.

His "RAVE ON" is  in  the  Top  200  of  Rolling  Stone Magazine's 'Greatest

Hits of All Time' and he is featured in the new Universal Music DVD

"The Music of Buddy Holly and The Crickets, The Definite Story".

Dottie and I were married in 1983 after knowing each other for four years.  (Didn't want to rush it like I did the first time. haha)  She is a wonderful caring person.  I'm a lucky man.

Dottie und ich heirateten 1983, nachdem wir uns 4 Jahre kannten. (Ich wollte es nicht wie beim ersten Mal überstürzen, haha) Sie ist eine wunderbare fürsorgliche Person. Ich bin ein glücklicher Mann.

Joe Sonny West looks pretty cool on this great photo. I like his songs and I like him just as he is, a real friend.                                 Auf diesem Foto sieht Sonny echt cool aus. Ich liebe seine Lieder und mag ihn so, wie er wirklich ist.

My real name is Joe Sonny West. My parents named me Joe and I was given the name Sonny by the father of a musical family group that I did shows with when I was 17.  It has stuck ever since. 

Mein richtiger Name ist Joe Sonny West. Meine Eltern nannten mich Joe und den Namen Sonny bekam ich vom Vater einer musikalischen Familiengruppe, mit denen ich bei Shows auftrat, als ich 17 war. Das ist dann so geblieben.

The name on my early picture on the guitar was sort of a mistake, in part my fault and in part the painter's fault.  I just laughed about it at the time, thinking it would be forgotten soon anyway.  But after the mistake was made I decided to record under that name for "Rock-Ola Ruby", again not thinking that it would still be around fifty years later!!  (Who could have guessed) 

Der Name auf meinem frühen Foto auf der Gitarre war sowohl mein Fehler als auch der des Beschrifters. Damals habe ich darüber gelacht und dachte, es sei bald vergessen. Aber nachdem der Fehler gemacht war, entschied ich, mit dem falschen Namen "Rock-Ola Ruby" aufzunehmen; ich konnte nicht ahnen, dass mir dieser Name noch 50 Jahre später anhing!! (Wer hätte das gedacht)

On the contract for 'Oh Boy', Norman Petty or the people in NY mistakenly spelled it 'Sunny', again I figured it didn't matter, and I guess it doesn't. Later, in late 1957 Norman used the spelling 'Sonny' and it has been so ever since.  In some secular dealings I use the full name.

Im Vertrag für "Oh Boy" schrieb entweder Norman Petty oder die Leute in New York versehentlich "Sunny", wiederum dachte ich, das macht nichts, so denke ich auch noch heute darüber. Später, Ende 1957, verwendete Norman die Schreibweise "Sonny", die bis heute gilt. Bei manchen Geschäften benutze ich den vollen Namen.

I think what people like about me on stage is that I am a 'common man' .  I had such a strange upbringing, always moving, (about 24 different schools I attended), many times near starvation, like living on the edge, waiting for the world to end.  I have many experiences, some comical, some sad, but all true.

Was die Leute an mir auf der Bühne mögen ist, dass ich ein "einfacher Mann" bin. Ich genoss eine sehr ungewöhnliche Erziehung, zog laufend um (ich ging auf 24 verschiedene Schulen), oft dem Verhungern nahe, ein Leben am äussersten Rand, in Erwartung des Weltuntergangs. Ich machte viele wirkliche Erfahrungen, einige komische und einige traurige.

On my shows I always have to do Rock-Ola Ruby, Oh Boy and Rave On.  I have good reception when doing Cast Iron Arm* and Haunted House.  I do a few serious songs but I like to do most anything blues-based in an upbeat fashion.  I personally like songs like Haunted, as they are fun and don't really have a serious message. 

Bei meinen Shows muss ich immer Rock-Ola Ruby, Oh Boy und Rave On singen. Es wird gut aufgenommen, wenn ich Cast Iron Arm und Haunted House vortrage. Ich trage einige ernsthafte Lieder vor, aber am meisten mag ich alles aus der bluesigen Ecke, aber etwas flotter. Ich persönlich mag Lieder wie 'Haunted', da sie Spass bedeuten und wirklich keine ernsthafte Botschaft enthalten.

The song, Cast Iron Arm, was written by Roy Orbison and also credits a man named Scott and of course, Petty, since it was recorded in 1957 at Petty Studios in Clovis, NM. 

It was recorded by the Teen Kings with Peanuts Wilson doing the vocals.  His name was Johnny Wilson but there was another Johnny Wilson and the record company thought it would confuse people with another Johnny Wilson. Released on Brunswick...not a hit.  But a good song to play now to the rockabilly crowd.
